Follow any local guidelines or recommendations. It is not a destination for refugees or gypsies from everywhere like many famous cities in Europe. Nonetheless, precautions are always recommended.
6. English speaking level is Not Bad with Locals and Good with touristic Agencies
The official language is Montenegrin. English may not be widely spoken among the local population in the northern areas. However, it is different in the south. Tourism agencies, hotels, and establishments in popular tourist areas generally have English-speaking staff. Most people speak English well there, including a big part of the local population.
7. Currency is Euro, Not Like Neighbors and Not So Expensive
Montenegro uses the Euro as its official currency, which simplifies monetary transactions for international travelers. Compared to its neighboring countries, Montenegro is reasonably priced. It offers good value for money in terms of accommodation, dining, and activities.
Card payments are accepted in the big cities for restaurants, cafes, and most excursions. However, it is always necessary to have cash. US Dollars will not work there in any way. ATMs are widely available in the big cities and their old towns. There should be no issues to withdraw Cash Euro.
As per our experience, holding a multi-currency card like WISE online banking is very practical. It allows you to convert with the least fees from any currency and pay without additional fees. Just book your card and enjoy your freedom with paying everywhere and with any currency from your card.
8. Go Apartments, Not Hotels
Opting for apartments instead of hotels can provide a more authentic and immersive experience. Apartments allow you to live like a local. They offer access to kitchen facilities. Often, they offer more spacious and personalized accommodations. Another benefit of the apartment option is that it’s usually cheaper. Apartments can be closer to the old town or even inside it. 9. Montenegro Has the Biggest Lake in Balkan Countries Area

In Kotor, we found many special restaurants for fish and meat. We tried a few of them. We really enjoyed that experience from all sides.
For fresh fish and seafood, we can recommend Cesarica restaurant for a lunch meal. The staff is very friendly and helpful there. Their food is totally fresh. The prices are really reasonable. This is impressive given the big portions and the location in the heart of the old town.
The other one is Tanjga Family Restaurant. It’s located outside of the old town and managed by a family. They are famous for their big portions and the tasty mix of meat like chickens, veal, and pork ribs. Prices are totally affordable for their platters. Note that you have to stand sometimes in line if you come at peak lunch or dinner times. Try to come a bit earlier to avoid standing much.
In Budva we had a nice meal experience on the port. We enjoyed a sunset dinner, which is highly recommended at the Old Fisherman’s Pub. The staff is very helpful and professional. The view to the port with sunset is really amazing. The food is very tasty and prices are acceptable for such a location with a great view.
12. Get All Your Staff Before Sundays
One of the Things To Know Before Traveling To Montenegro is to note that some businesses may have limited hours. Smaller shops and establishments might be closed on Sundays. Also, Make sure to have all the necessary supplies before the weekend. This includes groceries or other essentials. Some places can have reduced availability on Sundays.
